2. Using flipped learning to prepare students for practical sessions

Challenge

Practical sessions in specialised facilities such as laboratories and studios are an important and highly valued part of many programmes. However, there are often logistical limits on the availability of facilities and equipment, and students' previous exposure to practical work can often vary considerably.

Flipped approach

Providing flipped learning materials allows students to prepare for their practical / lab / studio session. It supports differentiation of the learning by enabling students with less previous experience an opportunity to develop their knowledge and confidence before the 'live' teaching.

  • Self-created or curated instructional videos and presentations introduce students to the equipment / techniques / environment they will be using.
  • Students may be provided with skills sheets, interactive learning objects, or equivalent resources that allow them to investigate new procedures or processes.
  • Online quizzes allow students to review and test their understanding before the synchronous session. The data from these quizzes can allow instructors to identify common errors or misconceptions that should be addressed in the live session.
  • Synchronous time can review the material covered in the pre-sessional learning and then focus on the practical application of that learning.
  • In some circumstances, larger induction-type sessions/walkthroughs can be replaced by shorter, more 'hands-on' small-group sessions.
